How Long Does it Take to Install a New Asphalt Shingle Roof in 2023?

how long does it take to install a roof in 2022

Often consumers ask us “How long will this take?” when we are scheduling their new roof installation. But the question isn’t so simple to answer.

Normally your typical asphalt shingle roof replacement should only take 1 to 2 days but there are a lot of variables that go into a roof installation that could drastically affect the time it takes to install a new roof.

Whether it be some rotted plywood or just simply the size of the roof, these factors all make a difference. So in this article I will go over 5 of the many scenarios that affect the time it takes to complete a new roof installation.

5 Quick Answers to This Important Question:

  1. The weather might be the most obvious answer to this question. If there is a chance of rain on the day of the roof installation then the roofing crew may take extra precautions when preparing for the day. Maybe they’ll only remove and install the asphalt shingles from one side of the house because they know rain is coming in the early afternoon. Or in the colder months, the roof may be covered in frost in the morning which delays any roof work from happening until late morning. Sometimes a short delay like frost can affect the entire job from being completed in 1 day.
  2. This one is more rare but something as simple as 1 crew worker calling off work can change everyone’s duties for that day which affects how quickly they can work. If the ground worker calls off then everyone that normally works on the roof has to band together and clean at the end of the day before the sun goes down. Cleaning the ground is one of the most important parts since on your average roof hundreds, even thousands, of nails are pulled out of the roof and most end up on the ground. If one of your fastest shinglers calls off then the rest of the crew has to pick up the slack but most of the time that means the job won’t be finished in just 1 or 2 days.
  3. Delivery issues sometimes throw an entire day off when installing a new asphalt shingle roof. Most of the time the delivery truck brings all of the roof accessories, such as underlayment and nails and the crew obviously needs that before they can even start a roof install. I’ve personally been in this situation many times and it can be very frustrating when just waiting around for the materials after we’ve torn the entire roof off.
  4. Like I mentioned before, rotted plywood is probably the most common reason a roof installation can be delayed. Replacing 3 to 5 sheets of plywood takes time, especially if the plywood isn’t on-site. Someone has to go to the supply house, track it down, pay for it, load it up, then drive it back to the job site. Once it’s back on site the crew has to remove the entire rotted sheet of plywood and install a new one before continuing on with that particular section of the roof.
  5. Number 5 is probably THE most common answer when we are asking “How long will it take to install my new roof”, and that answer, the size of the roof.  Roofs come in all shapes and sizes.  You can have a small roof with 6 dormers and it will take the same time to install as a large roof with no dormers.  Having to cut shingles while installing them slows down any shingle installer.

We always say “No 2 roofs are the same” and I’m sure most roofers will agree. So when having your new asphalt shingle roof installed, be patient with the company and their crews.

There are a lot more than just 5 reasons and I’m sure after reading this article you will agree.  Roofing isn’t a safe job and working too fast can be dangerous. Everything from weather to simply what your roof looks like all make a huge difference on that exciting install day!
