Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, is small but mighty. At less than 2.5 square miles and under 10,000 people, this small town still boasts some great things to do just outside of Harrisburg, PA. Living and working in the area, we love to enjoy all that our great state has to offer during all four seasons.
In Pennsylvania, summer is a beautiful time of year, with temperatures ranging from 75 to a balmy 95. So, getting outside is an absolute must. Here are some of the best spots to head to cool off this summer.
Looking to spend the day at one of PA’s premier racing venues? Look no further than Williams Grove Speedway. Whether you’re checking out a race or attending an event, there’s plenty of family fun on hand for all ages.
Duke’s Bar and Grill is a family favorite in the Mechanicsburg area. They’re known for their wings, which are some of the best around. But they also offer great entrees at affordable prices. And who doesn’t love an outdoor patio in the summer? We know we do.
Riverfront Park sits along the Susquehanna River and is a great spot to sit and have a picnic or enjoy any of the fun festivals and events in the park throughout the year—events like Woofstock Festival and American Music Fest.
Mechanicsburg Pool is always open for business if you’re looking to enjoy the summer in town! The pool offers activities like swim lessons, water aerobics, and more. And there are always special events going on each week like diving dog shows, movie nights, and much more.
Fall foliage in the forests of Pennsylvania is a gorgeous sight to see. Colors burst from the leaves for a brief amount of time, so you have to act fast to catch it at its peak!
Spend the day at Gifford Pinchot State Park with your family. There are hiking trails, picnic areas, and more to enjoy with loved ones. And the fall foliage is absolutely stunning here!
Early October is the best time to visit Great Allegheny Passage. Although it’s a 2-hour drive outside of Mechanicsburg, it is so worth the trip. This park offers some of “the best leaf-peeping” in all of PA.
You’ll find all 96,025 acres of the Tuscarora State Forest right outside Mechanicsburg. This forest is stunning all year round, especially in mid-October as the fall colors peak and the trails are the perfect place for a fall hike.
You can spend an entire day in Michaux State Forest exploring the trails. These trails are perfect for hiking, biking, or anything in between. With over 85,000 acres of space, this forest provides the perfect place for relaxing walks and thrill-seeking mountain biking right in Mechanicsburg proper.
Things cool down to the 30s and 40s during the winter, so heading inside seems like a great option. Beat the winter blues by heading to some of these must-see spots throughout Mechanicsburg.
The National Civil War Museum is 50,000 square feet of family educational entertainment. Spanning from the time of the American Revolution to the end of the Civil War in 1865, this museum provides a great educational experience for everyone in your family.
Again, this museum spans history from the first settlers of Pennsylvania to modern times. With over 350,000 artifacts and archives available at your fingertips, you will leave with an appreciation for the history of not only Pennsylvania but America.

Technically open all year round, the Williams Grove Farmers Flea Market is still a perfect place to head for some fresh produce and other fun local vendors to bust into the nice post-winter weather.
For those less inclined (no pun intended) to tackle a big mountain hiking trail, they can head to Vincent DiFilippo Nature Preserve. This small trail loop runs along the river, so you can get some nice quiet views while getting in some exercise in the beautiful spring air.
Although slightly more of a challenge than Vincent DiFilippo’s loop trail, Thurmont Vista offers panoramic views over the surrounding areas. You are sure to have some nice fun exploring this quiet park just outside of Mechanicsburg.
